Disc Problems

What is disc prolapse?

Disc problems occur when the spinal discs—soft, gel-like cushions between vertebrae—become damaged due to aging, injury, or excessive strain. These conditions can lead to pain, restricted movement, and nerve compression. Common types of disc issues include:

  • Herniated Disc (Slipped Disc): The inner gel of the disc leaks out, pressing on nerves.

  • Bulging Disc: The disc protrudes outward but remains intact.

  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Age-related wear and tear causes disc deterioration.

  • Thinning Discs: The disc loses hydration, leading to reduced cushioning.

Symptoms

  • Chronic Back or Neck Pain: Worsens with movement or prolonged sitting.

  • Sciatica (Radiating Pain): Pain extending down the arms or legs.

  • Numbness & Tingling: Especially in the hands, feet, or buttocks.

  • Muscle Weakness: Difficulty gripping objects, walking, or standing for long periods.

  • Limited Mobility: Trouble bending, twisting, or maintaining posture.

Treatment

Non-Surgical Treatments (For Mild to Moderate Cases)

  • Pain Management: Anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants, or steroid injections.

  • Physical Therapy: Strengthening exercises to improve posture and flexibility.

  • Lifestyle Changes: Weight management, proper ergonomics, and activity modifications.

  • Chiropractic Care & Acupuncture: Alternative therapies for pain relief.

🔹 Minimally Invasive Treatments

  • Epidural Steroid Injections: Reduce inflammation around compressed nerves.

  • Microdiscectomy: Removes the herniated portion of the disc to relieve nerve pressure.

  • Laser Disc Decompression: Uses laser energy to shrink the bulging disc.

🔹 Surgical Treatments (For Severe Cases)

  • Discectomy: Removes the damaged disc to relieve nerve compression.

  • Spinal Fusion: Fuses two vertebrae to stabilize the spine.

  • Artificial Disc Replacement: Replaces a damaged disc with an artificial one.
